The Ottawa Public Library’s “Aging by the Book” program is a volunteer-led reading circle, hosted in branches and in library homebound services locations (retirement residences), that helps older adults explore aspects of aging. Participants harness the power of stories to build a community of interest around a broad and flexible conception of aging by reading copies of excerpts from texts in the library’s collections to spark discussion. Participants have told us that “there’s so much to talk about,” related to aging, and some of our oldest participants have expressed how much of an impact the program has had on them. A 94-year old said “We’re just learning to be old-aged people.” Some participants have made social connections with neighbours after the program. One participant told us, “Even at our age we’re still finding our way. And this helps us…this has been so stimulating.”
